The making of a field coat

Coloniaire craft

A field coat looks simple from a distance. It is anything but. Before a single garment leaves our atelier it has passed through the hands of pattern cutters, machinists and finishers — each adding a detail you will only notice years later, when the coat has softened to the shape of your shoulders.

We begin with leather chosen for how it ages rather than how it photographs. Premium goat suede that softens and deepens with wear. Hides tanned slowly using methods that have not changed in a century. Paraffin-waxed or oil-impregnated where the field demands it, the finishing is honest, the seams are reinforced, and every pocket is placed where a hand naturally falls.

The result is a coat made to be repaired rather than replaced — and, we hope, handed on.
